However, like any other hiring situation, in order to attract the best employee, you need to offer competitive wages, benefits and realistic incentives. 

Legally you must offer individuals in the J-1 program the federal minimum wage. As for H-2B employees, the Department of Labor mandates the prevailing wage. However MTL recommends that employers increase the prevailing wage and offer additional benefits if possible. 

In addition, the Department of Labor requires employers to provide international workers with certain benefits such as airfare, and we recommend assistance with housing and local transportation. When working together, we assist all our employers with presenting their information in a way that guarantees the best possible applicants to be attracted to your positions.

International workers have a very specific set of needs. MTL is always available to assist you in addressing those needs.

  • When communicating to the workers, speak clearly as English may not be the employee’s first language.
  • Workers often experience culture shock at the beginning of their program. To mitigate this risk, assist the worker in adjusting to your work culture by assigning a buddy.
  • Use the worker’s peers to assist you in improving communication and clarifying needs.
  • Give constructive feedback as issues arise.
